5 Things I Learned About Entrepreneurship At The 2019 #ByobRetreat

IMAGE.JPG

Atlanta was the place to be this past weekend because of the second annual Build Your Own Brand Retreat ( #ByobRetreat ). The 2.5 day conference was a chance for entrepreneurs to network, connect and learn from branding professionals, influencers and experts. The retreat took place at the Hilton in Atlanta and was perfect to accommodate 2,000+ attendees.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Here’s 5 things I learned from the #ByobRetreat for entrepreneurs:

 1. Community over Competition

Before attending the conference you have to be ready to network and have an open mind. If you do so, then you will have the opportunity to connect with your next potential client, business partner or friend. Everyone there understood that no one is in competition. So it kept the energy in the room on a High.

2.  Give yourself permission to be great

You have to believe in your brand and stay consistent. Even though there are people who may seem like their success came overnight, don’t get caught in the spiral of moving too fast. Focus less on the competition and more on what makes your business the greatest and stay consistent.

3.  Champions never stop practicing

Dia Simmons of Commbs Enterprises mentioned during her talk, even when you are good at something, never stop practicing. Never get comfortable with the work you’re doing and challenge yourself to think outside of the box and beyond your imagination.

4.  It’s not about the bag, it’s about the purpose

Karen Civil mentioned that, at the beginning of entrepreneurship, when money starts coming in, it can be easy to go after the money. But as you grow and get closer to your purpose, it will no longer be about the bag.

LRG_DSC02949.jpg

5.   Zone in and focus on yourself

Have you ever heard that, at the top it can be lonely? I can agree that It can be lonely for a moment where you’re working on yourself. However, In your entrepreneurship journey you should have a circle of five friends that can hold you accountable, and connect you with new resources, or provide you advice.

How to prepare your business for if Facebook and Instagram shuts down again
Untitled design (2).png

Did you wake up yesterday to post or check status updates only to find an error message? At first you may have thought you needed to update your app or refresh your feed. But no! Globally, Facebook and Instagram were both shut down for hours. This brings us to the point of how to prepare your business if this happens again. What would you have done if you lost all of your followers and no way to connect with your audience? If you don’t the answer then continue reading.

Yes followers are great, but the best way to be prepared for another shutdown is to SECURE THE DATA. A great way to gather data is by having an email list. Think of when you visit a brands website and within seconds theres a pop up asking for your email. In exchange for your email they provide a discount or any other special promotion. You can do the same with you brand. The goal is to turn your followers into subscribers. If a shutdown was to happen again you can have access to their data.

Below are 4 email marketing softwares for you to start SECURING THE DATA:

1.MailChimp

MailChimp is personally my favorite on this list. It’s FREE when you have under 2,000 subscribers, user friendly, and comes equipped with tools and resources for small to large size businesses.

2.Constant Contact

If your goal is to create easy email marketing campaigns, and fast then give Constant Contact a try. Need more convincing? See how it works here.

3.ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is for more than just email marketing. Its platform can also used as a CRM ( Customer Relationship Management) tool that provides customer feedback in realtime. If you have a E-commerce brand it also connects with Shopify along with other popular apps.

4.ConvertKit

ConvertKit is ideal for bloggers and creative entrepreneurs who work on their passions full-time. Which is why their platform comes with a price tag of a minimum of $29 per month. There’s also free 14 day trial period.

Meet the Girl Boss Embracing Diversity and Inclusion in Fashion, Media & Print.

Bomb & Bossy Feature.png

At the reveal of WhatRUWearing’s Reflect Me Like campaign I had the opportunity to catch up with the founder Farissa Knox for an exclusive interview. She explains her inspiration behind the campaign, what she wanted attendees to take away from the event plus what we can expect next. She is working to inspire people to understand that we need to be reflected the way we see ourselves and not the way that other people see us.

Tell us more about the campaign

What we decided to do was come up with a creative way to make a statement about the fact that there is not enough inclusion and diversity today in the lifestyle and fashion space when it comes to media, print and digital. Our way of starting that conversation was recreating some of the most iconic and personally our favorite magazine covers in the fashion, music and lifestyle space. We use ourselves as models and with people and women and rockstars that are inspiration to us. And we then took the titles and some of the story lines in the publications and made them our own so we were not just copying.

Instagram / @alissapagels

Instagram / @alissapagels

What is it that you want the attendees to take away from the event

First and foremost I want people to leave inspired to be honest with you. I want them to understand that we are the ones actually in control of the content that we see today. Because if we don’t like it then we don’t have to click on it. And if we don’t click on it then people don’t get paid for advertising and they don’t get sponsored and all that. Click and engage with the type of content that really engage with who you are and support them. And that’s what we are trying to be. We’re trying to be one of the people involved in the start of this conversation.

WRUW

WRUW

So what can we expect next from WhatRUWearing?

A lot, we’re working constantly on new features. We do editorial, we have a podcast season 6 of our podcast Candid Creators will be launching in a few weeks so check itunes out for that. And we have a reality show called PR Girl that we’re filming right now and that launches towards the end of October this year. And we have plenty more ideas that I hope to be able to create.

Event Recap: Media Girls On Tour Chicago

FullSizeRender.jpg

It's always fun to attend networking events to meet new industry professionals, sip cocktails network. This past weekend the Bomb and Bossy team went to Media Girls On Tour, Chicago edition and it was AMAZING!

FullSizeRender.jpg

The event was held at Salon Lokei and featured vendors and a panel of media professionals including Charmaine Johnise of Black Ink Crew Chicago and Power 92, Bree Specific, Candid Candace of Chicago Tribune, Jade Lucas of 106.3, Samantha Calendar of Essence Magazine, Maha Gorgi of Power 92, Mika Stambaugh of The Mas Ink , and Bria Fachon of Power 92.

IMAGE.JPG

Conversations ranged from what to expect while working in the media industry, balancing family, social media overload, and how to know when to take a break. Each panelist was able to speak to each question based on their level of experience but they all had one thing in common, knowledge and insight to give to attendees.

It was amazing being in a room filled with so many talented media professionals and we wanted to share some of our key takeaways from the panel. When asked about what to expect when working in media, most of them mentioned to know when to turn your emotions off. In some industries it can be easy to hide your emotions but when you're interacting with an audience who either see your face or hear your voice your must leave your problems at the door.

Event Vendor - Naturallyflawlessskincare.com

Another good point mentioned was knowing when to allow time for yourself. This can mean adding self care practices into your daily routine which can include, meditation, social media breaks, or taking moments to simply be present to enjoy what's going on around you.

If you're new to the industry and wanted to learn from a professional it was suggested to seek out a mentor. If you can't physically find a mentor near you, follow them on social media, mimic the things they do, attend the same events as them, or simply contact them to let them know you're in interested having him/her as your mentor.

Overall there was loads of great advice, tips, and suggestions for how to make in the media industry. We would like to thank Blogging Beauties Networking for having the Bomb and Bossy team apart of your event. Emil Socialize on the influence of UK sneaker culture on the US.
lasaye-hommes-477532-unsplash.jpg

I don’t know if you noticed but the sneaker industry has been on a rise. High end brands such as Gucci to Zara are adopting the trend and offering them in array of unique styles.

For US consumers they are known to us as comfort. But to the UK culture, trainers are a way to identify one with their generation. I sat with UK sneaker collector, Emil Socialize, and producer of the United Kingdom's first documentary about UK’s sneaker culture, Soleseekers. He spoke with Bomb and Bossy about the influence UK has on the US, his sneaker collection, plus what he wants us to take from the film.

Q: You’re here to present your film Sole Seekers, tell me what was you inspiration behind it?

IMAGE.JPG

A: The inspiration behind sole seekers was my love of shoes and the fact that UK wasn't represented in global sneaker culture, or trainer culture. I wanted to do something that highlighted the UK's influence and presence. Something basically for the UK.

Q: Tell us about your sneaker collection. Is it a huge walk in closet? Right now you’re rocking off white.

A: I've got way to many shoes in my house it's now a problem. There's so many more shoes that I want I moved about three or four times in the last few years and I've got shoes everywhere. My mother called me and she said come get your shoes, and she piled up these shoes. I got about 600 pairs at her house. Yea.. way to many shoes.

Q: At what age where you when you realized I’m a sneaker head?

A:You know what.. In the UK the term sneaker became new to us, we never used that. When we were like ten or eleven that's when we became fashion conscious with school. We would like certain shoes or certain things in certain colors and we wanted to get the latest ones. It was school; it was a bore. I was eleven, I wasn't going to GQ or Fader. I saw something on TV so that's where that came from.

Q: What is it you want us to take from this documentary?

A: From the US point of view I want you to see the UK point of view. I want you to see the differences and the similarities.  I want to try to bridge the gap if I can. We are bombarded with US culture, US tv shows, US fashion. But it's the european influence that I'm trying to capture as well. I'm trying to spread the message

Soleseekers premiered at The Alpha Space in Chicago. It was apart of This.That.&The lll weekly event where they have new sponsors every Thursday.

To find out what's next for Soleseekers follow them on Instagram for updates.

7 looks we're stealing from the streets of ESSENCE Fest 2018.

Hold onnn, So half a million attendees showed up to Essence Fest, and no one from the Bomb and Bossy team was there? After living vicariously through everyone on social media we promise to make an appearance next year. This high attendee rate came to no surprise because the release of the movie 'Girls Trip' last year increased the hype and some hotels even sold out weeks after the movie release.

This year's festival featured concerts, workshops, panel discussions, so much black girl magic and festival style that we are ready to steal and add to our wardrobe. There was everything from color blocking, layering, to sneakers with dresses.  Check out our favorite festival looks ahead.

IGTV: 3 Things you need to know about Instagram's new update
Image: instagram-press.com

Image: instagram-press.com

As soon as we get comfortable with an update here comes Instagram dropping yet another update. The newest update to be release is called IGTV.

IGTV is a new app for creating and watching long-form videos. Instagram was inspired most by Youtube but they also adopted some features from SnapChat. A great thing about this app you can also watch it from within the Instagram App or in the IGTV app.

instagram-press.com

instagram-press.com

instagram-press.com

instagram-press.com

One of the first things you should know about IGTV is that it only allows you to record vertically. If you've been recording videos from Instagram stories then you should be familiar with recording from this perspective. Recording vertically also allows our videos to be more user friendly and it makes us fill more engaged.

A second thing you should know is that based on the amount of followers you have, you can record videos up to hour. If you have a an account under 10,000 you can only post videos that are no more than 10 minutes in length.

Thirdly, you can add cool cover images to your videos to draw more attention to your content. When creating these covers, make sure you be creative. This includes putting the title of your video on the image or adding cool emoji's of drawn art. The more creative your cover image the more views you can gain.

There's no surprise that video is currently dominating our social media feeds. Instagram is constantly rising everyday and with this update it shows no signs of slowing down. If you need a digital marketing expert to help with your IGTV, contact someone today from the Bomb and Bossy team.

Business Bestie Speed Networking at Studio G Chicago

This Past weekend our founder Covania Washington produced a networking event alongside fashion stylist, Danielle Vonkeller titled 'Business Bestie Speed Networking' at Studio G Chicago. We also had the pleasure of having an amazing panel of entrepreneurs from Chicago including Resa B. Luster of Luster Products and founders of Rare Vodka Kim and Tonesha.

FullSizeRender.jpg

The event was filled with food, cocktails, conversation and endless connections. This was truly a moment for women entrepreneurs from Chicago to learn how to start a business, grow their business and the importance of having a "Business Bestie" or business partner.

FullSizeRender.jpg

When guest arrived each person had to sign in and everyone was encouraged to mingle before the start of our panel discussion. After the informative and motivating panel was an hour session of speed networking. Each participant had three minutes to get the know the person in front of them before switching to a new Business Bestie. Following the end of the fun and interactive networking session, everyone had the chance to follow up with who they enjoyed speaking with the most. This was done in the form of exchanging business cards, contact information etc.

Critics called the Heavenly Bodies theme blasphemous but to us it's the perfect way to show that fashion relates to everything, even in religion.

We are on the edge of our seats to see what the theme for next year will be. Until then, we await the blessings from this fashion miracle.

Bomb and Bossy Business: Studio G is a Women only Coworking Space Providing Resources for Chicago Girl Bosses
IMG-3004.JPG

Coworking spaces are becoming increasingly popular. The main goal is typically to provide a space for start up entrepreneurs to get work done without the hustle and bustle of a cafe. That's also apart of the mission for Studio G, a women only coworking space on the south side of Chicago.

This past weekend Bomb and Bossy had the pleasure of attending Studio G's press party during their free coworking week where ZhaZha Cassanova is the founder.

In an Interview with CBS Local Cassanova stated " We are ready to speak up for ourselves, we are being unapologetically ourselves." CBS Local also called it a "Boys club of business." After spending the day there we can definitely agree with both statements.

IMG-2996.JPG

There was plenty of networking going on between Girl Bosses who own businesses or who are inspiring to own a business.

This event provided women across the city of Chicago the opportunity to mingle and make new connections. There was also a very inspiring panel discussion where speakers spoke on business, finances, and dealing with work life balance as an entrepreneur.

IMG-2997.JPG

From left to right, we heard from Gabriela Garcia founder of Modern Brown Girl, Makeda Smith of CEO Chicks, Kristin Anderson of Merrill Lynch, and ZhaZha Casanova founder of Studio G and moderator of the event.

IMG-3002.JPG

We can most certainly see Studio G disrupting the coworking industry in the coming years! At a time where entrepreneurship is on the rise Casanova saw there was a need for this space in Chicago.

Bomb and Bossy will like to salute the Studio G team for creating a space for women to get work done while also having support from other women.

IMG-2991.JPG

This is something that is most certainly needed within our communities and we encourage our readers to become a member.

The benefits are having a personal workspace, support from fellow girl bosses, bomb ass wifi, happy hour on Friday's plus more. Who doesn't love all of that?

Bomb and Bossy BUSINESS: The L.E.G.A.C.Y Awards Gala Aims to Celebrate Black Entrepreneur's
IMG_3652.JPG

This past weekend Bomb and Bossy was invited to The L.E.G.A.C.Y Awards Gala. Both WDB Marketing and BLUE1647 partnered to bring change by celebrating the Black business community. This was an inspiring night filled with networking, food, music, cocktails and total empowerment if you let it take you there.

Meet the girl boss in charge of the event,Keeana Barber, CEO of WDB Marketing and Founder of the LEGACY Awards, orchestrated the Gala to support Black entrepreneurs in Chicago. Barber felt it was a strong need to celebrate others after ten years of working with more than 2,000 business owners. Continue reading to see how she's using the event to fill a void in the African American business community.

The event was used as the perfect platform to bring together African American entrepreneurs. Here I am photoed with Author and Co-Founder of Miss Jessie's, Miko Branch, who was also the Featured Keynote Speaker.

It was truly an honor to experience the rush of connecting with as many people as possible, snagging interviews, and capturing exclusive moments all while celebrating the Honorees, and voting for the Emerging Youth $5,000 Awards. All of which salutes to L.E.G.A.C.Y. (Leadership – Education – Growth – Achievement – Community – Youth).

Throughout the hustle and bustle of networking, I had the chance to catch up with Dr. Jeffery Sterling for an EXCLUSIVE interview. He spoke on entrepreneurship and how these type of events make an impact on Black entrepreneurs. This was his response:

"Recognition of additional individuals who have already made it and paved the way really can serve as inspiration to individuals who may won't know that such things are possible."

See our full video interview here.

Attending this event also allowed me to discover the true importance of networking and making an impact in your community. Within four hours I managed to connect with over 30+ Black business owners who are all doing BIG things! Cheers to connections!

Wakanda Style: Black Panther's Positive Impact on Black Culture and Fashion
black panther header.PNG

Black Panther is more than a Marvel movie, it's an inspiration to black culture and fashion. As a 23 year old fashion enthused African American woman, I took note of all the styles presented in the film. Before the release, social media already had memes on what people would wear to the theaters.

black panther style.PNG

Marvel even took it to their Instagram for fans to share their looks using hashtag #WakandaStyle for a chance to be featured on their feed. And of course many fans shared their look totaling to over 3,000 hashtags used. ( Not bad for the opening weekend)

Image via @looseunicorns Instagram

Image via @looseunicorns Instagram

This is very powerful because in the past some African American fashions were frowned upon or laughed at. The release of the film gave out an abundant source of praise on African Fashion from the past. If you joined in on the buzz then you can thank the film's Hollywood custom designer Ruth E. Carter for her creative direction and styling.

Image via Getty

Image via Getty

As mentioned in several interviews, Carter understood the role that fashion will play on the film. In an interview with The Atlantic, Carter states that she wanted to “show the world the beauty of tribal dress and move that forward in a more modernistic way."

This leaves us asking the question, is African fashion the future of style? To our opinion we will say, most certainly! Let's not forget that American society have taken ques from Black Culture for many years, and now we're taking our crowns back. As fans of the movie as a whole, only time can tell how this groundbreaking film will greatly impact our communities.

5 Ways To Use Instagram To Make Money Moves
Image: Girlboss

Image: Girlboss

It's official. Businesses and people can actually make money from Instagram, and I'm talking 6-figure incomes. The best part about Instagram, it's a free marketing platform and open to anyone who creates an account.

Here are five actionable tips you can take to start making extra cash! Who's ready? Read on...

1. Nail down what it is that you offer.

If you're reading this then I'm assuming you're a business owner or you generally want to make money on Instagram. At this point, you should know what you are selling or offering. Don't have a clue? Turn your passion, hobby, or skills into a service, have strong promotion via social media, and make money!

2. Know who you are talking to.

Once you have your product, then you have to think about your customer or follower. What is it they do on a daily? What type of things are they interested in? Find out these answers, and then give your followers what they want. Be apart of their everyday lives by asking them questions, telling them your personal or brand story and enticing them with giveaways.

3. Create original and engaging content

Spend time on crafting out your content and always remember the 80/20 rule. 80% of your post should be non promotional and the following 20% should be promotional. Start by looking at your account from a business perspective. For example, you can show off images of your customers using your product, engaging with your service, or behind the scenes of how your product is made. Next, you can follow up with a promotional post that highlight your product to generate revenue.

You also want to develop a consistent theme and stick with at least one scheduled post per day.Consistency is very important because it allows you to build a relationship with you followers. When you build a relationship, and show how your product can be of value, your followers will be happy to buy into what you have to sale.

4. Use relevant hashtags.

While showcasing your business and what you have to offer, you should always seek additional exposure. A great way to generate more exposure is through niche specific hashtags. To find relevant hashtags, you will have to research the top keywords in your industry and apply them to your hashtag list. If you continue this strategy, you will gain additional followers, turn them into buyers and create a cash flowing machine.

5. Craft a powerful bio.

When was the last time you put effort into your bio? Take an analysis of your current bio and answer these following questions: Do you list what industry you are in? Did you mention your services or product and how it can help anyone that follows your account? Do you have a call to action, calling them to visit your website and shop?

The more clear and straight to the point your Instagram bio, the easier it will be for you to start making income from Instagram. If you want your Instagram to turn a stranger into a loyal follower it starts with your bio, creating engaging content, and being consistent.  (Strangers to your business), and once you have them in, provide value, then sale.

Conclusion

Instagram can be a very resourceful way to make money and build a following. However, before you begin to see real sales you have to put in the groundwork. Once you worked on building an audience of engaged followers there's no reason why you can't use Instagram as a way to increase your income.

This year, our favorite celebrities took next level style risk with no shame in self expression. Isn't that what style is all about? Everyone seemed to pull it off so well.

There was also a big fashion statement that we saw amongst Grammy attendees and that was the white rose to represent the #MeToo, Times's up movement. Stars used their glow to shine a light on female empowerment, and gender equality. However, some fans were not impressed due to lack of female nominations in each award category ( But thats's none of our business ).

Bomb & Bossy Approved: Wired The Design Boutique Vol. 1 Fashion Show

At the start of the year I decided that I would attend at least a few fashion shows per month on behalf of Bomb & Bossy and promote them on our blog. I kicked off the year by showing up to Wired The Design Boutique's volume one fashion show, where Safaree of Love & Hip Hop was the host, alongside Blake Martin of Blake Martin Productions

From the moment I walked into the door I knew this event was Bomb & Bossy approved. I would have captured some shots at the step and repeat but the food and drinks in the VIP section were calling my name. I also had a slight cold the night of the show so I wanted to get warm and settle in.

Like any fashion show, guest came dressed in their Sunday's best, or shall I say Friday's best. But none of these looks topped the styles presented on the runway. Looks were broken down into scenes, and of them all, lace was my favorite. I didn't get many pictures of the models in each piece but you can find their latest collection on their website.

Top 5 ways to use social media to grow your brand in 2018
neonbrand-375050.jpg

2018 is literally the year of going viral and I want to show you how. It's time to stop scrolling and start doing. When is the last time you shared a post that had a million views or shook your head at the fact you don't have as many followers as your competitors.

Well lucky for you I have the top 5 things you can do to start gaining the exposure you deserve. First, let's look at the type of content you're posting. I run into so many clients that say why am I not growing my following, no one like my pictures, and I'm not receiving not one comment. The answer is simple, if you're not getting any engagement that's because you're not posting information that's considered valuable to your audience and potential customers.

Let's jump into what you should be doing NOW to create grow your brand in 2018:

1. OPTIMIZE YOUR ACCOUNT

Let's start with Instagram. There are two different accounts that you may be seeing, personal and business. If you are running a business from a personal account then you are already doing things wrong. Changing your account to a business profiled allows for you to use Instagram's built in analytics to know more about your followers. The analytics feature is really cool because it allows you to track your engagement rate and determine if what you're posting matter to your followers. You even get to see demographics, age, and location. These are things that you can't get from a personal profile, so if you if haven't done so already, please change to a business profile. Moving on to Facebook. We all know that Facebook bought out Instagram so of course you also have access to the same analytics that you may see on Instagram.

2. SAME PROFILE PICTURE ACROSS EACH PLATFORM

It's also very important that you have the same profile image across each of your social channels. If you have a company logo then I recommend using your logo as your profile image so your customers can easily identify your brand. If you are currently 5 different platforms then all images should be the same.

3. BIO WITH CALL TO ACTION

Have you ever saw a bio that says something about a business but doesn't tell their followers what to do? A call to action can be something simple simple as " Join our newsletter, Visit our website, or check out our latest product launch " . Having a simple call to actions acts a sales funnel to lead your followers or new profile viewer to a next step. You never want to leave them with nothing to do.

4. POST ACCORDING TO NUANCES OF EACH PLATFORM

Each platform is different in it's own way. I see so many business making the mistake of having their social media channels look like nothing but advertisements. Want to know a secret? You're doing it all wrong. When people are getting on social media, they are not going on there to look at ads. So you know what you have to do as a business owner. Fit in and actually tell your story, entertain, and provide value without coming across as corporate. Social media is used to be fun so position your business that way.

5. DON'T TAKE THINGS TO SERIOUSLY

There is a difference between your company or brand website and social media. As a business owner you use your website to discuss things in a corporate manner, but on social media it's a different playing fun so lighten up. Don't you love to see funny meme's? So does your customers. Be fun, make your customers laugh, provide value, and promote your services in a way that fit in to what your customers scroll past on a daily.

Bomb and Bossy provide social media marketing services for business owners who don't have time to fully manage social iterations.
