Meet the Girl Boss Embracing Diversity and Inclusion in Fashion, Media & Print.

At the reveal of WhatRUWearing’s Reflect Me Like campaign I had the opportunity to catch up with the founder Farissa Knox for an exclusive interview. She explains her inspiration behind the campaign, what she wanted attendees to take away from the event plus what we can expect next. She is working to inspire people to understand that we need to be reflected the way we see ourselves and not the way that other people see us.

Tell us more about the campaign

What we decided to do was come up with a creative way to make a statement about the fact that there is not enough inclusion and diversity today in the lifestyle and fashion space when it comes to media, print and digital. Our way of starting that conversation was recreating some of the most iconic and personally our favorite magazine covers in the fashion, music and lifestyle space. We use ourselves as models and with people and women and rockstars that are inspiration to us. And we then took the titles and some of the story lines in the publications and made them our own so we were not just copying.

What is it that you want the attendees to take away from the event

First and foremost I want people to leave inspired to be honest with you. I want them to understand that we are the ones actually in control of the content that we see today. Because if we don’t like it then we don’t have to click on it. And if we don’t click on it then people don’t get paid for advertising and they don’t get sponsored and all that. Click and engage with the type of content that really engage with who you are and support them. And that’s what we are trying to be. We’re trying to be one of the people involved in the start of this conversation.

So what can we expect next from WhatRUWearing?

A lot, we’re working constantly on new features. We do editorial, we have a podcast season 6 of our podcast Candid Creators will be launching in a few weeks so check itunes out for that. And we have a reality show called PR Girl that we’re filming right now and that launches towards the end of October this year. And we have plenty more ideas that I hope to be able to create.

This Past weekend our founder Covania Washington produced a networking event alongside fashion stylist, Danielle Vonkeller titled 'Business Bestie Speed Networking' at Studio G Chicago. We also had the pleasure of having an amazing panel of entrepreneurs from Chicago including Resa B. Luster of Luster Products and founders of Rare Vodka Kim and Tonesha.

The event was filled with food, cocktails, conversation and endless connections. This was truly a moment for women entrepreneurs from Chicago to learn how to start a business, grow their business and the importance of having a "Business Bestie" or business partner.

When guest arrived each person had to sign in and everyone was encouraged to mingle before the start of our panel discussion. After the informative and motivating panel was an hour session of speed networking. Each participant had three minutes to get the know the person in front of them before switching to a new Business Bestie. Following the end of the fun and interactive networking session, everyone had the chance to follow up with who they enjoyed speaking with the most. This was done in the form of exchanging business cards, contact information etc.

This past weekend Bomb and Bossy was invited to The L.E.G.A.C.Y Awards Gala. Both WDB Marketing and BLUE1647 partnered to bring change by celebrating the Black business community. This was an inspiring night filled with networking, food, music, cocktails and total empowerment if you let it take you there.

Meet the girl boss in charge of the event,Keeana Barber, CEO of WDB Marketing and Founder of the LEGACY Awards, orchestrated the Gala to support Black entrepreneurs in Chicago. Barber felt it was a strong need to celebrate others after ten years of working with more than 2,000 business owners. It was truly an honor to experience the rush of connecting with as many people as possible, snagging interviews, and capturing exclusive moments all while celebrating the Honorees, and voting for the Emerging Youth $5,000 Awards. All of which salutes to L.E.G.A.C.Y. (Leadership – Education – Growth – Achievement – Community – Youth).

Throughout the hustle and bustle of networking, I had the chance to catch up with Dr. Jeffery Sterling for an EXCLUSIVE interview. He spoke on entrepreneurship and how these type of events make an impact on Black entrepreneurs. This was his response:

"Recognition of additional individuals who have already made it and paved the way really can serve as inspiration to individuals who may won't know that such things are possible."

Attending this event also allowed me to discover the true importance of networking and making an impact in your community. Within four hours I managed to connect with over 30+ Black business owners who are all doing BIG things! Cheers to connections!
